A Plain-Text Introduction to Your Website
When a customer visits your website, they see a homepage, a menu and pages designed to guide them. When an AI tool visits, it sees something much messier: navigation menus, scripts, cookie banners, footers and repeated boilerplate, all mixed in with the content that actually matters.
An llms.txt file is a simple way to cut through that. It's a text file that sits at the root of a website (for example, yourdomain.com/llms.txt) and gives AI tools a clean summary of the business and a short list of the pages that explain it best.
The idea was proposed in 2024 by Jeremy Howard of Answer.AI as a lightweight convention, much like robots.txt was decades ago. It's written in Markdown, a simple text format that both people and machines can read easily.
What Goes Inside an llms.txt File
The format is intentionally simple. A typical llms.txt file includes:
- A heading with the business or site name.
- A short summary, usually a sentence or two, describing what the business does and who it serves.
- Helpful details that let an AI tool describe the business accurately, such as its location, service area and specialties. For a Utah business, that might be "commercial landscaping for Salt Lake and Davis counties."
- Sections of links to the most important pages, each with a brief note on what the page covers. Service pages, location pages, case studies and key guides are common choices.
Some sites also publish a companion file, often called llms-full.txt, that holds the full text of key pages in one place. It's optional, and most small business sites don't need it.
The goal isn't to list every page. It's to point AI tools toward the pages that represent the business best, in its own words.
How llms.txt Differs From robots.txt and Sitemaps
Most websites already have two similar-sounding files. They do different jobs.
robots.txt sets the rules
A robots.txt file tells crawlers what they're allowed to visit. It can block certain bots or keep private sections out of search engines. llms.txt doesn't block anything and doesn't grant permission. If you want to limit which AI crawlers can access your site, robots.txt is still where that happens.
Sitemaps list everything
An XML sitemap lists every page you want search engines to index, along with when each was last updated. It's built for completeness, not context. A sitemap tells a crawler that a page exists. It doesn't say why that page matters.
llms.txt adds context
llms.txt sits in between. It's a curated, human-written summary that says, in effect, "here's who we are, here's where we work, and here are the pages that explain it best." It complements a sitemap and robots.txt rather than replacing either one.
Why llms.txt Matters for Utah Businesses
More customers across Utah ask AI tools for recommendations, explanations and comparisons before they ever visit a website. "Who builds custom homes in Utah County?" "What's the best way to choose an IT provider in Salt Lake City?" When those tools describe a business, it helps if they're working from accurate information. An llms.txt file supports that in a few ways:
- Accuracy. The business controls its own short description, instead of leaving an AI tool to piece one together from menus and footers.
- Focus. It points to the pages that matter most, so a tool reading the site spends its attention on services and proof, not the privacy policy.
- Local clarity. A clean list of services and the Utah cities served makes it easier for a tool to match the business to location-based questions.
- Low effort. It's a small text file. Writing a good one takes an hour or two, and keeping it current takes minutes.
It also has a useful side effect. Writing a two-sentence summary of your business and choosing your ten most important pages is a good exercise in its own right. If that's hard to do, the website's messaging probably needs work too.
Being Realistic About What It Does
llms.txt is still a proposed convention, not an official web standard. Support varies. Some AI tools and developer platforms read it, others haven't said whether they use it, and Google has indicated it doesn't rely on it for search rankings.
So an llms.txt file on its own won't change how often a business is mentioned in AI answers. Visibility still comes from the fundamentals: clear service and location pages, real proof of your work, consistent business details, reviews and good technical SEO. We cover those in more depth in our guide on how Utah businesses can get mentioned in AI search.
Think of llms.txt the way you'd think of structured data: a small, sensible addition that makes a site easier for machines to understand. It costs very little, carries no real downside and positions a business well if adoption keeps growing.
Tips for Writing a Good llms.txt File
- Write the summary for a stranger. Say what you do, who you do it for and where in Utah you work, in plain language. Skip slogans.
- Keep the link list short. Ten to twenty of the most important pages is plenty for most businesses.
- Describe each link. A few words on what each page covers helps tools choose the right one.
- Include your service area. List the cities or counties you genuinely serve, matching your website and Google Business Profile.
- Only include facts you'd stand behind. Anything in the file may be repeated back to people asking about you.
- Use full, live URLs. Avoid links that redirect or require a login.
- Update it when the site changes. New service, new location, retired page: adjust the file at the same time.
On most modern websites, adding the file is a quick task for a developer. If your site makes small changes like this difficult, that's often a sign it's time to look at website development that's easier to keep current, or ongoing webmaster support.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an llms.txt file?
It's a plain-text file at the root of a website, written in Markdown, that gives AI tools a short summary of the business and a curated list of its most important pages, each with a brief description.
Is llms.txt the same as robots.txt?
No. robots.txt tells crawlers what they may or may not access. llms.txt doesn't block or allow anything. It points AI tools to helpful content and describes the business in its own words.
Does llms.txt improve Google rankings?
No. Google has indicated it doesn't use llms.txt for search rankings. Its value is in giving AI tools that do read it a clear, accurate picture of the business.
Do Utah small businesses need an llms.txt file?
It isn't required, but it's a low-effort addition that helps AI tools describe a business accurately, including where it works. For most small businesses, a short file with a clear summary, the Utah areas served and ten to twenty key links is enough.
How often should an llms.txt file be updated?
Whenever services, locations or key pages change. A quick review every few months keeps it from pointing to outdated or missing pages.
