Felice Frankel is a science photographer, author and educator based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. A research scientist in MIT's Department of Chemical Engineering, she creates images and graphics of science and engineering research for journals, magazines and exhibitions, has written books on visual communication, and teaches researchers how to make clearer pictures of their own work.

Felice Frankel's work has appeared on the covers of Nature, Science and dozens of other journals, in exhibitions from the MIT Museum to the Champs-Élysées, and in a shelf of books on visual communication. Her previous website held much of that, but the homepage was little more than a slideshow, a note about her latest book and a link to a course update. Everything else sat behind a short menu, and first-time visitors got little sense of the range of her work.
The site has several kinds of visitors. Editors and researchers come to see the photography and license images, institutions look for workshops and speaking, press want background and past coverage, and readers look for the books. Each of them needed a clear way in, and the images themselves needed room to be seen properly.

Drag to compare Felice Frankel’s previous homepage with the site we built.
We started with the photographs. The new design uses a warm, quiet palette of off-white and near-black, a refined Newsreader serif for headings and generous space around every image, so the science stays the focus. The homepage is laid out in five numbered chapters, About, Images, Books, Teaching and Articles & Press, each leading to a full page on that part of her work.
We then built the site on WordPress and Elementor Pro, with the images split into three collections under one Images menu: journal and book covers, photography and exhibitions. The books, press, workshops and the American Scientist column archive are organized as consistent, repeatable layouts, so new covers, articles and books can be added without redesigning a page.

The site is built around the images and the work behind them. Choose a feature to see it on the site.
The Photography page gathers 74 images in one masonry grid. Visitors can filter by From the Lab, Microscopy, Science Is Everywhere, Visual Metaphors or Just for Fun, so a researcher looking for microscopy and a reader browsing for fun each see what they came for.

Neutral backgrounds, plenty of white space and large image grids let the photographs carry each page. The site now feels like a gallery of her work, with the design staying in the background.
Researchers, editors, institutions, press and readers each have an obvious place to start, from the Images menu to Workshops and Articles & Press. The homepage introduces each area in a short numbered section with a link to the full page.
Covers, books, press coverage, workshops and decades of American Scientist columns are now organized in consistent layouts instead of long lists. Visitors can browse by year, filter by category or page through press articles without losing their place.
Built on WordPress and Elementor Pro, the site uses repeatable layouts for covers, books, articles and columns. New work can be added by filling in the same fields each time, and the pages keep their design as the collection grows.
